Global Water Dance

May 2, 2021 @ 1:30 pm - 2:30 pm UTC+0

Global Water Dance (May 2, 1:30pm-2:30pm)
Poche Beach, 2771 N El Camino Real, San Clemente, CA 92672

Our dance draws attention to the global plastic waste crisis and its effects upon our oceans, mammals, birds and sea life in an interdependent ecosystem. On Poche beach where the dance takes place in San Clemente, California, we see waste problems occurring at the surface of the ocean when waste washes up to shore daily, and local people work diligently to remove the plastics, only to see it washing up again to litter the shoreline. Mismanaged waste remains on land, triggering public health crises among vulnerable communities. As we think beyond the beach we recognize and call for the urgent need for action to reduce plastic waste and find sustainable possibilities to finally end plastic pollution and address mismanagement of plastic waste.

We are creating a film of our dance to be included in the Global Water Dances 2021 online festival, and we wish to use this film on an ongoing basis to help raise funds for a local environmental group who supports our goals. Global Water Dances is a movement that connects and supports a global community of choreographers and dancers to inspire action and international collaboration for water issues through the universal language of dance.

International Solidarity Concert for India Covid Relief

International Solidarity Concert for India Covid Relief

July 10, 2021 @ 2:00 pm - 4:30 pm UTC+0

As we navigate vaccines and come out of lockdown in North America, some countries such as India are experiencing the very worst of Covid19. Join our community in a global online solidarity concert and silent auction emceed by Bollywood star @geetsagarofficial on Saturday July 10 starting at 2pm PST. Our community, our Sangha, can help us embody a mindfulness practice. Thich Nhat Hanh speaks of true love being made of four elements: loving kindness, compassion, joy, and equanimity. In Sanskrit, these are, maitri, karuna, mudita, and upeksha. “If your love contains these elements, it will be healing and transforming….True love has the power to heal and transform any situation and bring deep meaning to our lives” (Thich Nhat Hanh). Who is your community, and how can you reach out with love? Join us to support and hear from frontline workers for India Covid relief. This is a moment that shows the power of small steps that can make a difference as several Gandhian organizations came together since April when the horrific second deadly wave of covid hit India. Please come, share your solidarity, enjoy beautiful music, dance, and art, and hear updates from the frontlines to see how donations are assisting on the front lines. It is a hard time for many of us, but even if you cannot donate, you can share love and compassion by attending. It means a lot.

teach in for peace

Embodying Peace

April 23 @ 1:00 pm - 9:00 pm UTC+0

The terrible war waged by the Russian government against Ukraine has focused the world’s attention on the horrors of war and the need for peace. Instead of turning our attention to more spending on militarization and weapons of destruction we need to work for peace. Peace does not just happen; it requires sustained effort to create cultures and practices of peace and nonviolence. One important component of this is education.

The purpose of this teach-in is to share practices for and approaches to education for peace and ahimsa. The teach in highlights offerings from educators around the world. Seónagh’s offering highlights a method of embodying peace by tapping into the body’s innate power to heal old hurts through developmental movement re-patterning.

Moving Stories–A Somatic Exploration of the Creative Voice
Register HERE

After warming up with a Body Mind Dancing class we will bring our voices into the workshop space through sound and movement, and explore where in our bodies we may have held ourselves back or been held back by others as women or femmes. We present movement ideas through the lens of the life-death-life cycle of a Wild Woman archetype who goes through cycles related to femininity and aging, and who holds space for necessary deaths and births that are part of life’s journey. We will breathe and empower physical statements of strength and concerns as we each develop and personalize our own dance movement.

BMD Moving With Everyone/ Movement for ALL

This BodyMind Dancing class will include an embodied storytelling structure called “Cultural Location” in which we identify experiences of being treated as “less than,” based on a broad definition of disability – whether physical (visible or hidden) or emotional, personal or familial or cultural. We will identify experiences of difference and use dance, movement and embodied conflict resolution to share mutual dignity

Embodied Conflict Resolution – Integrating the Aesthetics of Disability
Register HERE

In this workshop in embodied conflict resolution we will continue to move in our bodies while honing in on various types of experiences of disrespect that result from “isms” such as ableism. The non-profit “Dharma in Motion” and Dr. Martha Eddy, come together with a select number of in person participants and international participants from the “Fondación Comparlante” of Buenos Aires, and the “International Gandhian Institute for Nonviolence and Peace.” We look at conflicts that arise in families, communities, or within oneself, in relationship to “isms” that each person has experienced, which create inhumanity and indignity. There will then be an opportunity to focus specifically on ableism as a source of conflict. We will learn embodied conflict resolution and movement skills that help foster clearer positive communication for families, educators, parents, and professionals using conflict resolution skills in their communities. We will have movement and verbal interaction with the group of attendees, and time for international dialogue.

Note to participants: This class will take place indoor/outdoor (weather permitting). Please let us know if you have any mobility challenges and accessibility needs. Salish Seas Retreat Space is beautiful and complex, we will do our best to support everyone’s mobility needs.
