SUMMARY:Embodying Gandhi @ Pedagogy of Ahimsa
DESCRIPTION:This is a workshop for educators to explore key Gandhian principles of non-violent activism through embodiment practices. Movement experiences will be accessible to all levels and abilities\, and the content will focus on embodying one of five key Gandhian principles. We will apply these principles to real-world examples\, approaching learning through a model for change I developed through years of practice. Educators will experience how externalizing ideas in a physical space and expressing a concept in physical form can shift a learner’s understanding of that concept.

SUMMARY:Indigenous Peoples Weekend
DESCRIPTION:Logo credit: Quw’utsun artist\, Charlene Johnny \nReconciliation through Movement Languages: A Movement Workshop\nWorkshop Leaders: Elder Daniel Elliot (Stz’uminus) and Elder Robert George (Quw’utsun’) \nThis workshop offers a rare glimpse into an interdisciplinary artistic process. Participants are invited into the creative process through a guided movement exercise\, or may participate by observing. \nThe workshop brings together various artists involved in “Dances with Addictions\,” an art film in development conceived by Elder Daniel Elliot (Stz’uminus). The film concept brings together Wing Chun martial arts\, T’sinqwa First Nations dance\, and a parallel world of classical dance technique and somatic movement. At the centre of the film is a man who confronts his Spirit of Addiction\, embodied as a physical presence. His struggle unfolds in a duet\, which is expressed through martial arts. The film shows fragmented environments–street reality\, trauma memory\, and lived experiences–that merge through green screen compositing\, placing the viewer inside the internal world of addiction. As the film progresses\, the Spirit of Addiction is no longer an enemy\, but is realized as part of the self. \nFrom the moment of transforming the Spirit of Addiction onward\, the film expands into community. Elders and T’sinqwa dancers ground this process in culture and ceremony. Running alongside the visible conflict of addiction within the film is a parallel movement world offered by contemporary dancers under the direction of Dr. Seónagh Kummer who choreographs the classical dance movement and street scenes within the film. The classical dance movement both parallels and develops the film’s themes\, carrying within it the internal truth of transformation as it becomes shared and collective. \nDuring the workshop\, the various artists share about their creative roles before inviting participants into the circle. Elder Daniel Elliot offers his artistic vision for the film. The T’sinqwa dancers led by Elder Robert George (Quw’utsun’) share and discuss the role of dance in community and ceremony\, which is central to grounding the film in culture. Daniel and Seónagh describe their patient artistic collaboration—an act of deep listening\, friendship building\, and slow development as they trusted the creative process to evolve Daniel’s vision. Daniel’s themes of caregiving guided the movement motifs that Seónagh used to focus the movement creation. Working closely with dancer-collaborator Robbyn Scott to develop a duet\, this movement expression then deepened a dialogue with Daniel to support the film’s development. \nNow\, mirroring the Virginia Satir Change Model that shapes Daniel’s film concept\, we invite new movement elements. New dancers\, recently introduced into the process\, offer us new communication styles\, shapes and patterns. Participants in this workshop may also help expand the movement creation process. Through a guided movement exercise\, a new chaos emerges to inform the direction of the work.

SUMMARY:Bluestocking Performance at Tarragona Endansa 2026
DESCRIPTION:Séonagh Kummer is honored that her choreography “Bluestocking” was presented at the Tarragona Endansa festival in Spain and performed by the beautiful dancer Anna Paris (La Casqueria).\nI premiered the work in LA with Anna in 2019\, and it is about how powerful\, intelligent women who may not follow norms of society are sometimes perceived in negative terms. The topic seems even more relevant today.

SUMMARY:Embodying Peace
DESCRIPTION:The terrible war waged by the Russian government against Ukraine has focused the world’s attention on the horrors of war and the need for peace. Instead of turning our attention to more spending on militarization and weapons of destruction we need to work for peace. Peace does not just happen; it requires sustained effort to create cultures and practices of peace and nonviolence. One important component of this is education. \nThe purpose of this teach-in is to share practices for and approaches to education for peace and ahimsa. The teach in highlights offerings from educators around the world. Seónagh’s offering highlights a method of embodying peace by tapping into the body’s innate power to heal old hurts through developmental movement re-patterning.

SUMMARY:International Solidarity Concert for India Covid Relief
DESCRIPTION:As we navigate vaccines and come out of lockdown in North America\, some countries such as India are experiencing the very worst of Covid19. Join our community in a global online solidarity concert and silent auction emceed by Bollywood star @geetsagarofficial on Saturday July 10 starting at 2pm PST. Our community\, our Sangha\, can help us embody a mindfulness practice. Thich Nhat Hanh speaks of true love being made of four elements: loving kindness\, compassion\, joy\, and equanimity. In Sanskrit\, these are\, maitri\, karuna\, mudita\, and upeksha. “If your love contains these elements\, it will be healing and transforming….True love has the power to heal and transform any situation and bring deep meaning to our lives” (Thich Nhat Hanh). Who is your community\, and how can you reach out with love? Join us to support and hear from frontline workers for India Covid relief. This is a moment that shows the power of small steps that can make a difference as several Gandhian organizations came together since April when the horrific second deadly wave of covid hit India. Please come\, share your solidarity\, enjoy beautiful music\, dance\, and art\, and hear updates from the frontlines to see how donations are assisting on the front lines. It is a hard time for many of us\, but even if you cannot donate\, you can share love and compassion by attending. It means a lot. \nDate and Time: Saturday July 10\, 2021 2:00pm-4:30pm PST. SUMMARY:GLOBAL WATER DANCE
DESCRIPTION:Global Water Dance (May 2\, 1:30pm-2:30pm)Poche Beach\, 2771 N El Camino Real\, San Clemente\, CA 92672 \nOur dance draws attention to the global plastic waste crisis and its effects upon our oceans\, mammals\, birds and sea life in an interdependent ecosystem. On Poche beach where the dance takes place in San Clemente\, California\, we see waste problems occurring at the surface of the ocean when waste washes up to shore daily\, and local people work diligently to remove the plastics\, only to see it washing up again to litter the shoreline. Mismanaged waste remains on land\, triggering public health crises among vulnerable communities. As we think beyond the beach we recognize and call for the urgent need for action to reduce plastic waste and find sustainable possibilities to finally end plastic pollution and address mismanagement of plastic waste. \nWe are creating a film of our dance to be included in the Global Water Dances 2021 online festival\, and we wish to use this film on an ongoing basis to help raise funds for a local environmental group who supports our goals. Global Water Dances is a movement that connects and supports a global community of choreographers and dancers to inspire action and international collaboration for water issues through the universal language of dance.
